Guyanese who intend to renounce their Guyanese citizenship may do so by applying in person to the nearest Guyana Embassy, High Commission or Consulate.
Declaration forms can be downloaded and must be completed in duplicate and sworn to before the relevant Official at the High Commission.
If the applicant resides in a country where there is no Guyana Embassy, High Commission or Consulate the form can be obtained online through the Mission’s website and sworn to before a Magistrate, Justice of the Peace, Notary Public.
The forms can be submitted to the High Commission by citizens residing in the UK or Europe either in person or by post.
The following should be submitted with the declaration form (original and copy):

- Certified copy of the acceptance letter from the country of residence, which must be translated into English if in another language.
- Certified copy of applicant’s passport granting citizenship (if applicable).
Guyana Passport. - Two passport-sized photographs.
- Original birth certificate or a certified copy.
- Original marriage certificate or a certified copy (if applicable).
- Spouse’s original birth certificate or a certified copy (if applicable).
- Proof of address in country of residence (such as residency card or citizenship document).
- Copy of country identification card (if applicable)
- Written letter stating the reason/s for surrendering your Guyanese citizenship.
- Proof of overseas employment.
- Fee- the fee for this service is one hundred pounds (£100) which must be paid by cash, Postal Order or International Bank Draft made payable to the “Guyana High Commission”. Personal cheques are not acceptable.
Process
Renunciation of Citizenship Certificate is issued by the Ministry of Citizenship, Department of Citizenship and Immigration, Georgetown, Guyana.
Upon submission of the relevant documents to the High Commission, the application is forwarded to Georgetown for processing. This process can take between 6-9 months.
When the Certificate is available, the Guyana High Commission will make contact with the applicant.
Applications by Post
- Applications can be forwarded to the Guyana High Commission by post.
- Applicants in the UK who would like to have their Renunciation Certificates returned in the post are required to submit a pre-paid registered self addressed envelope or fifteen pounds (£15.00) for the return of renunciation certificates by registered mail.
Applicants residing outside of the UK are advised to arrange a Courier (DHL, FedEx, UIPS) for the delivery of their certificates. Applicants who arrange courier are required to email a copy of the Airway bill to the High Commission to be attached to their parcel. Emails can be sent to consularghcuk@mission.gov.gy
Note
- Uncertified photocopies of documents are NOT acceptable.
- Certified English translations of all documents in a foreign language is mandatory.
- Applications are forwarded by the High Commission to the Department of Citizenship and Immigration in Guyana and are usually processed within six to nine months.
- Persons choosing the return of documents by post should note that Renunciation Certificates are only returned by registered mail.
