NOTARISATION/ LEGALISATION OF DOCUMENTS

Notarisation and Certification 

The Guyana High Commission notarises or certifies legal documents such as: 

  • Affidavits
  • Agreements of Sale
  • Documents required for submission to Banks in Guyana
  • Proof of Address
  • Identity documents (Passport Bio page, Driver’s License) 
  • Letters to Banks etc 

All notarisation services are offered in person by appointment except for the following requests which can be sent via the post:

Requirement Checklist for Notarisation/Certification 

  • Original valid passport 
  • The original legal document plus three copies, where applicable 
  • Three unsigned copies of letters/ forms/ affidavits/agreements of sale that requires the applicant’s signature, where applicable
  • £20 fee per each type of document 

Certification of documents will be done on the same day of the appointment   

 

Power of Attorney 

Persons executing Powers of Attorney at the High Commission require the following:

  • Four (4) copies of the Powers of Attorney document (s) 
  • Two (2) original forms of valid photo identification (passport, driver’s licence, or national identification card) 
  • Four (4) coloured copies of each photo identification document 
  • £ 70 total fees, if one donor (appearer) is signing the Power of Attorney at the High Commission. The cost will vary if both the donor and donee or two donors signs the Power of Attorney at the High Commission
  • Persons are required to bring their own witnesses if an affidavit of subscribing witness is being executed with the Power of Attorney. If an affidavit is being executed, four (4) copies of the Affidavit is required along with an additional fee of £25. It is recommended that the witness be someone that is not party to the Power of Attorney. 
  • All Power of Attorney documents must clearly state the numbers of the photo identification documents for the donor and donee 

     

Please note the following are the requirements for a identification document to be deemed acceptable:

- Must bear a photograph;

- Must be valid and enforceable at the time of its presentation 

- Must be issued by a competent authority 

- Must bear the signature of the person to whom it is related; and 

- Must be used as an official form of identification in the territory, state, province or locality in which it was issued 

Please note that the notarisation of Powers of Attorney will be done on the same day but requires the submission of the documents before the appointment date. 

 

Applicants will be asked to submit the documents once they schedule an appointment. Failure to meet the requirements outlined above will result in the cancellation of scheduled appointments. 

 

Apostille 

The High Commission provides Apostille services for Birth Certificates provided that the following are presented:

  • Original Guyana Birth Certificate (Green Certificate) 
  • One copy of the Birth Certificate
  • Coloured copy of the applicant’s valid passport 
  • £35 fee 
  • Return self-addressed envelope or £15 for returns within the United Kingdom 

Please note that the processing time for Apostilles is five (5) working days.

 

Attestation of Education Certificates (UG diplomas, degrees) 

The High Commission accepts applications for the Attestation of certificates issued in Guyana by the University of Guyana and other educational institutions. 

The certificates are sent to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Guyana for processing and can take appropriately three weeks. 

  • Original Certificate (s) 
  • One copy of Certificate
  • Coloured copy of the applicant’s valid passport 
  • £35 fee 
  • Return self-addressed envelope or £15 for returns within the United Kingdom 

     

Required Format for All Legal Documents 

  • All legal documents (POAs, Affidavits, agreements of sale etc) must be prepared and typed in double line spacing with 2 inches margin on the left side
  • For POAs, please ensure that the signature does not appear on a page by itself 
  • Documents that consist of several pages must be printed on separate pages and not printed back and front 
  • Letters must state the full name, address and passport number of the person signing the letter. Letters must also be properly addressed to the receiver with their name and address 
  • All documents prepared for notarisation must have the full names of the person signing the letters and must correspond with that person’s passport. 

 

NOTE

  • Legal documents that have been notarised must be registered at the Deeds Registry in Guyana before they become effective.
  • Documents not in fulfilment of the above guidelines will be rejected.
